I have been leading workshops to Death Valley since 2005. This is a Winter Workshop when the valley is surround by mountains that for a short period of time can be snowcapped after rain and snowstorms. Catching a rainstorm can bring the desert to life. The place is a natural wonder and situated in America's largest national park in the lower 48 states. It is also the lowest place in the US at -282 ft below sea level. It's stunning dune fields are continually transformed by wind under big sky. Light and shadows constantly change revealing an amazing variety of form and color. The dune fields, badlands, mountains and salt flats throughout the park are varied and a number of plants and animals have adapted to this strange environment.
What will the weather be like? While many people in the country will spend the winter shivering in their fleece and staring at gray skies, we will be photographing, hiking, and swimming if you would like in California's Death Valley National Park. Oh and watching some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the world. The winter months are the best suitable time of the year for photographers to explore this surreal and quietly captivating California park. December has an average high of 65F and thier precipitation average at this time is 0.18 inchesso it will be quite warmer and drier than most other places around. Grab your camera and join us while we take in the dry desert air.

For anyone that has ever tried light painting, you might of experienced many difficuties and frustrations. With the right guidance you can make things a lot easier and extend your shooting hours beyond what the hours of daylight allow. In winter time you experience shorter days and shorter sunsets and sunrises that last only minutes compared to the long days of summer. I will be leading this workshop along with photographer
Floris Van Bruegel. together so bring your camera and a flashlight or two. We will also be photographing static stars, star trails and Joshua trees from the golden hour into the twilight hour. The facinating granite formations of the Little San Bernadino Mountains coliding with the Colorado and Mojave desert ecosystems create the beauty and uniqueness of this special park. There will be an optional siesta time to recovery from a slight lack of sleep.
This workshop is limited to 6 participants total. We go rain or shine - but of course, this is the desert, so rain is rare, and you should in fact be delighted if we run into some clouds, which can make night photography an even more magical experience. Price does not include transportation, food, or loding. I am happy to provide recommendations for lodging nearby, you are also welcome to join me and Floris at our campsite.
