Joshua Tree

Photos of Joshua Tree National Park which is located in the Southern California Desert. The park encompasses nearly 800,000 acres of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts, conserving two separate desert ecosystems at different altitudes. The name of the park is derived from the distinctive Joshua Tree, a tall-growing variety of the yucca genus that grows prevalently within its boundaries. It's a photographer's paradise full of iconic views. Two deserts, two large ecosystems whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation, come together at Joshua Tree National Park. Below 3,000 feet, the Colorado Desert encompasses the eastern part of the park and features natural gardens of creosote bush, ocotillo, and cholla cactus. The higher, moister, and slightly cooler Mojave Desert is the special habitat of the Joshua tree. In addition to Joshua tree forests, the western part of the park also includes some of the most interesting geologic displays found in California’s deserts. Five fan palm oases also dot the park, indicating those few areas where water occurs naturally and wildlife abounds. While it may at first appear lifeless, the desert supports myriad of creatures that become active during the evening and early morning. Coyotes are commonly seen near the park roads making their rounds. Jackrabbits and the shy kangaroo rats emerge from their dens in the evenings to forage. Bobcats are less frequently seen, but a lucky traveler might catch one silhouetted against the moonlight. Birds in the park include burrowing owls, vultures, golden eagles, and roadrunners. Lizards, tarantulas, and rattlesnakes may be found among the rocks. Photography Workshop info.

  • The Other Side - Arch Rock
Natural window formation light painted to show off the night sky and sea of boulders and rock piles the park has to offer. This natural arch formed in the White Tank Granite. This igneous rock is thought to have pushed its way up into the surrounding Pinto Gneiss between 135 to 155 million years ago creating a large pluton (see other earthcache). This pluton cooled slowly allowing the relatively large crystals of quartz, feldspar, and biotie to form.

  • Magnificent Desert
Sunset reflection of colorful clouds at Joshua Tree National Park. Boulders and rocks in the distance.

Editing a few photos from the Joshua Tree workshop over the weekend. We had a small group and I had one cancellation due to the weather. A little bit of rain in the desert wouldn't hurt anyone, the dramatic weather created a lot of unusual opportunities for us to photograph such as fog in the high desert, dramatic sunsets / sunrises and little pockets of water in many different places. These little pools are also known as "tanks" if they get big enough. Don't run from the weather that's only bring goodness with it!

  • Lobster Claw Arch
Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is famous for it’s otherworldly trees scattered amongst some very unique boulder formations. These piles and piles of rocks are almost endless it’s not a wonder why people often get lost in the maze of monzogranite. Curiosity makes you wonder what you can find in the sea of rocks. This arch probably doesn’t have an official name but some climber friends call it Lobster Claw Arch and the name is well suited to it’s shape. I spent a little bit of time scrambling through the boulders to find it so it was well worth enjoying in the warm light. Sometimes it’s the little things you can find off the beaten path that keep you searching for more to photograph. We all love the icons but it’s the lure of new things that pushes me to keep searching for something I haven’t seen yet.

  • Joshua trees and Intersection Rock in Hidden Valley, Joshua Tree National Park

Could this be an example of the Mojave Desert experiencing it's fall color? I was leading a night photography and light painting workshop over the past weekend here. We experienced all kinds of weather that we took advantage of such as the mist in the air seen in this photograph. It was from what I was used to seeing at Joshua Tree and knew it would have a painterly feel to the unique scene. Christina had come out to visit the evening before and after a late dinner we walked around Twenty-Nine Palms (aka the Oasis of Murals) in the light rain enjoying the many murals along the main street of small desert town. Perhaps a thought while I was creating this image, is I was thinking if I could create a mural of my own it would look like this. My brother John is an artist and was a well compensated one at one time. He has done quite a few murals in his lifetime but just not lately. So this one is for him!

About the Processing: It's a 2 shot panorama and shooting it at dawn after the rain gave it the cool tones. The camera was set to landscape in capture and for the most part besides burning the edges I just added a little contrast to the shrubs in the foreground. Finding mood and the timing is what made the scene.

This photograph gives me a feeling of being underwater so it's sort of an abstract image since there is a lack of water at Joshua Tree.

I scouted out some of the wilderness areas outside the park looking for wildflowers because the bloom in Joshua Tree hadn't happened yet. I was lucky to find these desert birdcage primrose blooming in a low lying dune field.

  • Natural arch in Joshua Tree Naitonal Park, light painted at night.

We light painted the "Goose Neck" here at Joshua Tree National Park over the weekend. One of the students lived for nothing but light painting and he learned there are many different ways to light paint. I would teach one way to paint with light and then change my mind or idea right in the middle of it. Here's an example. Thanks for looking and don't forget to Light Up the Darkness! - http://bit.ly/r9CrqC
